By night they’ll explore a massive tower called Tartarus, climbing floor by floor while fusing Personas and battling increasingly powerful Shadows. By day, you’ll attend school, build relationships with other students and faculty, and make choices that affect your party’s combat abilities.
The social sim and dungeon crawling portions are brilliantly intertwined, each one impacting the other. Who you build relationships with can grant new Persona types and abilities. The choices you make in conversations and activities affect your personal stats like courage, charm, and academics – which are needed to create the strongest Personas. It’s an ingenious RPG gameplay loop that sucks you in.
The turn-based combat itself is classic Persona/Shin Megami Tensei style. You control your party of characters, each equipped with multiple Personas to cast spells, use melee/ranged attacks, heal, and exploit enemy weaknesses. The “knock down” system where striking an enemy’s weak point lets you perform an “All-Out Attack” makes battles extremely satisfying. Fusing new Personas from captive monsters is equal parts addictive and confusing, as always.
Reload contains some new quality-of-life improvements like adjustable battle speed, new difficulty modes, and the ability to directly control your party members. However, the core gameplay remains intact and still feels a bit dated by modern standards – with lots of random encounters, no jumping in dungeons, etc. Those used to older RPGs will be right at home, but it could feel clunky for some newcomers.
Where Persona 3 truly shines is in its rich storytelling and atmosphere. The game is dripping with style and a moody, melancholic vibe from beginning to end. The music is hauntingly beautiful, combining hip-hop beats with classical and jazz influences. The visuals showcase an amazing blend of the mundane and the supernatural. And the writing masterfully explores dark themes of mortality, isolation, and how people find meaning in life.
Your party members are some of the most memorable characters in RPG history, each one deeply explored and battling their own personal demons. The protagonist is a mostly silent self-insert, but their journey is no less gripping and introspective. By the finale, you’ll have forged bonds difficult to forget.
The remaster does update the in-game 3D character models with higher fidelity textures. However, the pre-rendered full-motion video story cinematics have not been upgraded, so there is a noticeable visual clash between the dated FMV and in-engine graphics. It’s a minor quibble, but does show the limitations of simply uprezzing an older game’s assets.
For Persona 3 fans and newcomers alike, Reload is a dream come true – a way to experience one of the most unique and atmospheric RPGs in a modern package on current hardware. While the gameplay shows its age in some areas, the remaster does a great job of preserving what made Persona 3 so special in the first place. With new quality-of-life tweaks reducing some frustrations, now is the perfect time to get reacquainted with this classic JRPG gem.
